Home care action alert

Home care in California is under attack.  This is so important to me and I wanted to be sure you were informed so you could take action.

I would estimate that approximately 1500 home care/home health/hospice employers in California would be impacted by this, and many thousands of individuals who hire caregivers independently, and then hundreds of other types of employers (e.g. nanny agencies).

3 Steps to Advocacy

CAHSAH™s Grassroots Advocacy Plan for June, 2011

CAHSAH plans to run this action alert continuously over the next two weeks to emphasize the importance of your advocacy efforts on these two bills.  If you have not done so, please take a few minutes to read the alert below and to follow the three steps.

Home care in California is under attack from two different pieces of legislation that are being heard in the Capitol, and your efforts are critical to the outcome of the bills and whether or not home care in California survives. CAHSAH has been at the forefront of the advocacy efforts in opposition to both AB 889 (Ammiano) and SB 411 (Price), and has foreseen this month, June 2011, as the month that will have a significant impact on the direction of both bills. Below you will find three simple steps to make sure your voice is heard on these important issues, and we encourage everyone to take the time to do all three:

STEP #1

During the next two weeks, June 6th “ June 20th, meet with your local Assemblymember and Senator in their district office to discuss your concerns with both of these bills. Do this by calling their district office and asking to meet with the legislator and/or the appropriate staff regarding the bills. You can find your representative and their contact information here, http://leginfo.ca.gov/yourleg.html.

AB 889 will be heard by the Senate Labor Committee and SB 411 will be heard by the Assembly Health Committee; therefore, if your representative is on either of these committees it is even more important that you meet with them to discuss your concerns. We have created talking points for both bills, click here: (AB 889 and SB 411) to help in your meetings. Both committees are listed below:

Senate Labor Committee:
Senator Ted W. Lieu (Chair)
Senator Mark Wyland (Vice Chair)
Senator Mark DeSaulnier
Senator Mark Leno
Senator Alex Padilla
Senator Sharon Runner
Senator Leland Yee

(If your representative is on the Senate Labor Committee then please click here to view CAHSAH™s E-Alert from June 3rd that lists the team leads for each of these meetings)

Assembly Health Committee:

Dan Logue – Vice Chair
Tom Ammiano
Toni Atkins
Susan Bonilla
Mike Eng
Martin Garrick
Richard S. Gordon
Mary Hayashi

Holly J. Mitchell

STEP #2

Fax or mail your letter of opposition to the appropriate offices in the State Capitol. We have created template letters for both AB 889 and SB 411; however, we encourage you to make the letters as personal as possible.  Also, be sure to place the letters on letterhead if you or your agency have it. These letters determine how many people are officially counted in opposition to the bills, so they are very important.

AB 889, send to the following:

1.     Senator Ted Lieu, Chair of the Senate Labor Committee, Fax: (916) 323-6056, State Capitol, Room 4090, Sacramento, CA 94248-0001

2.     Senate Labor Committee, Fax: (916) 327-5703, 1020 N St., room 545, Sacramento, CA 95814

3.     Your own Senator, find here, http://leginfo.ca.gov/yourleg.html (it is best to address this letter to your Senator as opposed to Senator Lieu)

SB 411, send to the following:

1.     Assemblymember Bill Monning, Chair of the Assembly Health Committee, Fax: (916) 319-2127, State Capitol, P.O. Box 942849, Sacramento, CA 94249-0027

2.     Assembly Health Committee, fax: (916) 319-2197, State Capitol, Room 6005, Sacramento, CA 95814

3.     Your own Assemblymember, find here, http://leginfo.ca.gov/yourleg.html (it is best to address this letter to your Senator as opposed to Assemblymember Monning)

STEP #3

Come to Sacramento to let your voice be heard during the committee hearings on both bills. These committees will decide the outcome of the bills and it is critical that we pack the room with people to show our opposition. Dates and times are below (they are subject to change and we will notify you immediately if they do):

AB 889 “ June 22, 9:30AM at the State Capitol

SB 411 “ June 28, 1:30PM at the State Capitol

Please contact CAHSAH with any questions you may have at (916) 641-5795
